Improving dike reliability estimates by incorporating construction survival

چکیده

During construction of a dike, slope stability often reaches critical levels, due to the excess pore water pressures in foundation. The loading condition during has similarities with design conditions flood loading. Not only terms as main driving force, but also criticality stability. This paper examines how information survival stage can be used improve reliability estimate for dike conditions, using Bayesian updating. approach is exemplified range typical dikes and case study full-scale test embankment. result that increase significantly by including uncertainty reduction involved, especially on soft soil blankets. For investigated cases, posterior failure probability was up several orders magnitude lower than prior probability. factors influencing degree update, were ground construction. In conclusion, survived leads improved reliability-based safety assessments dikes, consequently more targeted cost-effective protection.

Improving Nano-circuit Reliability Estimates by Using Neural Methods

The reliability of nano-sized combinational circuits can be estimated by using different techniques, such as mathematical equations, Monte Carlo simulations, algorithmic approaches, and combinations of these. Commonly used equations are functions of gate count, and of the reliability and number of devices that make up the gates. The aim of this paper is to present a(n alternative) neural-based ...

Improving consumption rate estimates by incorporating wild activity into a bioenergetics model

Consumption is the basis of metabolic and trophic ecology and is used to assess an animal's trophic impact. The contribution of activity to an animal's energy budget is an important parameter when estimating consumption, yet activity is usually measured in captive animals. Developments in telemetry have allowed the energetic costs of activity to be measured for wild animals; however, wild activ...

Improving Density Estimation by Incorporating Spatial Information

Given discrete event data, we wish to produce a probability density that can model the relative probability of events occurring in a spatial region. Common methods of density estimation, such as Kernel Density Estimation, do not incorporate geographical information. Using these methods could result in nonnegligible portions of the support of the density in unrealistic geographic locations. For ...

Improving Gradient Estimation by Incorporating Sensor Data

Policy search algorithms have been effective in learning good policies in the reinforcement learning setting. Successful applications include learning controllers for helicopter flight [3] and robot locomotion [1]. A key step in many policy search algorithms is estimating the gradient of the objective function with respect to a given policy’s parameters. The gradient is typically estimated from...

Virtual Dike: multiscale simulation of dike stability

We present a Virtual Dike simulation module developed as a part of a flood Early Warning System (EWS) for the UrbanFlood project. The UrbanFlood EWS is a distributed system that analyzes sensor data received in real-time from flood defenses (dikes, dams, etc.) and simulates dike stability, breaching and flood propagation. The aim of the Virtual Dike module is to develop an advanced multiscale m...
